  39.   Union Busting: A multi-million dollar industry to take away your rights

Over 60 million workers would join a union today if given the chance. However, despite their overwhelming will, most of those workers will not get the chance to vote for a union, even fewer will be successful in forming a union, and fewer still will be successful in earning a first contract. The propensity for workers to improve their workplace through organizing for better wages and benefits has created a shadow industry that charitably calls itself "union avoidance," but is more accurately referred to as union busting.

Companies whose workers are organizing to gain union representation will pay tens of thousands, and sometimes millions of dollars to law or consulting firms in order to defeat organizing drives rather than allocating that money towards quality wages and benefits for their employees. The disdain for unionization is so strong that oftentimes employers will spend more money on "union avoidance" than the employees are asking for in their contract demands.

While employers have always resisted efforts to organize, union-busting firms did not become prominent until the 1970's. There are now thousands of these firms across the country, and their rise has a direct correlation with the decline in union density from 29% of U.S. workers in 1964 to 13% today.

During an organizing campaign, 82% of employers will hire a union busting firm, and their strategies are generally similar. Consultants encourage employers to unfairly exert their power by holding captive audience meetings, forcing employees into one-on-one meetings with supervisors, and systematically undermining the law by firing or suspending union supporters.  The ability for consultants and employers to break the law without repercussions, and to use fear and coercion to discourage employees from voting for a union is a major reason why we desperately need to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.

  40. Conway's racist anti union tactics

    Race Game Posted:

    14 Aug 2014 07:32 AM PDT

Laredo, TX employees recently signed cards to petition the NLRB for union representation. The LSX terminal in San Antonio held a meeting with their employees to tell them that the employees at Laredo who signed cards didn't know what they were signing because they don't know how to speak, write, or read english. They're trying to play the race card to persuade their own employees not to do the same thing. Conway is scum and we must remember that when they spew their lies. This is not an issue to do with race, this is an economic issue. This is about us fighting back against Conway's corporate greed. Let's keep this in mind when we vote at Laredo on September 12th

THESE DOGS ARE MAKING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS , MONEY THAT'S COMING OUT OF YOUR PAY CHECK TO PUT YOUR RIGHTS DOWN !!! CONWAY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ANY LEGAL OR ILLEGAL OPPORTUNITY TO DI DAMAGE TO IT'S EMPLOYEES. JUST TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT HOW THEY ARE ATTACKING OUR SERVICE CENTERS THAT TRY TO UNIONIZED. 46. Employees have the right to unionize, to join together to advance their interests as employees, and to refrain from such activity. It is unlawful for an employer to interfere with, restrain, or coerce employees in the exercise of their rights. For example, employers may not respond to a union organizing drive by threatening, interrogating, or spying on pro-union employees, or by promising benefits if they forget about the union.

  50. What Is the Employee Free Choice Act?

A majority of Americans worry that their children will be worse off than they are. While our families struggle to get by, corporate CEOs are making record profits--all while they're trying hard to deny us a voice on the job.

When workers are free to choose to join a union, our economy can work for everyone again. That's why we need the Employee Free Choice Act--a bill in Congress that would make it easier for workers to join together and bargain for wages that support a family and quality, affordable healthcare.
This bill will make it easier for workers to unite on the job, imposing stiff penalties for corporations who fire or intimidate workers who try to form unions and giving workers a seat at the table so they can negotiate their contracts just like CEOs do.

    The Employee Free Choice Act:

Makes it easier for working people to join unions by giving employees the choice to form a union and taking away corporations' veto powers.
Helps America's working families improve their standard of living. Workers in unions earn 30 percent higher wages and are 63 percent more likely to have employer-provided health insurance.
Fixes a broken system that gives corporations and CEOs far too much power. When workers try and organize unions, they are often harassed and intimidated; 25 percent of companies unlawfully fire pro-union workers.
Restores fairness and the promise of the American Dream, with a robust middle class, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
It's time our economy worked for everyone again. It's time for the Employee Free Choice Act.

  51. The Employee Free Choice Act of 2007
Workers who form unions have superior bargaining power. Working together, they can negotiate higher wages and better benefits. The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), presently being considered in Congress, facilitates worker organization by removing barriers to “certifying” a union for collective bargaining. This report estimates the impact that EFCA will have on employer-based health and pension benefits.

The report estimates the national impact of the Employee Free Choice Act:

3,537,625 more people with health insurance.
    2,773,045 more people with pensions

Bottom line is that if we the workers of (Con)way dont stick together and vote YES for the UNION then we shouldn't expect thing to get better for US,We will always be low lifes to the people running (Con)way,They will have the power to give us what ever they want when ever they want. They been doing it for the past 30+years so why would they change the way they make their PROFITS NOW.ITS ALL ABOUT THEIR $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$BILLIONS.WE DONT MATTER TO THEM.BUT LAREDO TX sure did throw a wrench into mix.THANK YOU LAREDO.UNION POWER TO ALL!!!!

  54. I AGREE BLOGGER,MY OPINION IS THERE'S NOTHING BETTER THAN KNOWING YOUR RIGHTS. ..IF MGMT IS COMING TO YOU WITH HARASSING STATEMENTS ABOUT VOTING, GUYS THAT'S YOUR RIGHT FREEDOM OF CHOICE. WHEN THEY SAY IF YOU VOTE IN UNION WE WILL BE FORCE TO CUT YOUR HOURS, GUYS THEY PLAN ON DOING THAT REGARDLESS, SOON AS THEY GIVE US THIS PENNY RAISE. GET ACQUAINTED WITH THE FACTS & MYTHS ABOUT GOING UNION. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH, CONJOB WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU. ALL THEY NEED IS 3 TO 5 PEOPLE THEY FEEL CAN THROW A WIN TO A LOSS. DID YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND WHAT THE BLOGGER SAID ABOUT A SHORTAGE OF DRIVERS NEXT YEAR? CON-WAY IS NO EXCEPTION WE ALREADY HAVE A SHORTAGE OF DRIVERS WITHIN CON-WAY NOW. TOM CLARK (AKA:CURLY/UNCLE FESTER) HAS SAID OUT OF HIS OWN MOUTH THAT THEY WILL DO ANYTHING TO STOP CON-WAY GOING UNION. SO THAT MEANS MAKING UP STATEMENTS ON A SHEET OF PAPER (NOT BEING NOTARIZED), TO LYING ABOUT ANY & EVERYTHING. WHEN WOLVES ARE READY TO TAKE THEIR PREY DOWN THEY COME IN PACKS (UNITY), THEY DON'T CARE WHAT THE SIZE IS OR HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO TAKE DOWN THEIR PREY (ENDURANCE), THEIR ON A MISSION TO KILL. SO GUYS ARE WE GOING TO SIT AROUND FOR CON-WAY TO CONTINUE THEIR ARROGANT TYRANNY OR ARE WE GOING EDUCATE OURSELVES CONCERNING OUR RIGHTS, COME TOGETHER IN UNITY AND BE READY TO ENDURE. THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF. STAND UP FOR YOURSELVES, LET'S KEEP PRESSING ON TO MAKE UNION A REALITY. CON-WAY POCKETS ARE DEEP THEY ARE SPENDING LIKE CRAZY TO STOP THIS MOVEMENT, BUT EVERY POCKET HAS A BOTTOM. THEY CERTAINLY DON'T WANT THE UNION TO FORCE THEM TO OPEN UP ALL THEIR BOOKS...THAT'S WHY GREG NUMBSKULL KEEPS SAYING WE DON'T NEED A 3RD PARTY. WELL HE MIGHT NOT NEED ONE BUT IT'S OBVIOUS THAT WE THE EMPLOYEES DO. SO GUYS IT'S NOT OVER, IT WILL NEVER BE OVER & THE TERMINALS THAT DIDN'T DO IT THIS YEAR WILL BE READY NEXT YEAR. UNION IN 2015! !!!

  55. Why are unions good?
In much of industrial America, workers long toiled under very unsafe conditions, earning extremely low pay and little to no legal protections. Unions brought about many major improvements for union workers that are now widespread among union and non-union jobs alike, such as paid vacations, weekends, sick leave, the eight-hour day, child labor laws, overtime pay, pensions, health insurance, holiday pay, workplace safety regulations, lunch breaks, and much more. Unions have served workers well by improving working conditions and helping workers avoid being exploited by employers. Also, unions have helped push through legislation the Affordable Care Act. Even today, unions have a strong impact. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, union members in 2013 had median weekly earnings of $950 (that's $49,400 per year), while non-union workers had median weekly earnings of only $750 ($39,000). That's a 27% higher income for union workers. First, the fact is that when unions are stronger the economy as a whole does better. The union advantage is even greater when you compare the percentages of union vs. non-union workers receiving specific benefits such as affordable Healthcare. Unions restore demand to an economy by raising wages for their members and putting more purchasing power to work, enabling more hiring. Second, unions lift wages for non-union members too, by creating a higher prevailing wage. Even if you aren’t a member of a union your pay is influenced by the strength or weakness of organized labor. The presence of unions sets off a wage race to the top. Their absence sets off a race to the bottom. Whatever form it takes, organized labor keeps our economy healthy. Third, in addition to helping workers win better wages and benefits, unions help all workers by giving working families a stronger voice in our communities, in the political arena, and in the global economy. By joining together, we can build the strength to hold elected officials accountable, stop the “race to the bottom” by employers who cut wages and benefits in favor of huge profits, and win improvements such as affordable, quality healthcare for all. Voting “Yes” and becoming a member of the Teamsters can have a favorable impact on the quality of life for you and your family.

  56. People, those of you who have lost to no voters or have not yet petitioned, do not have a say in anything at Con-way. Con-way will continue to change their policies for the benefit of Con-way, not you!! Remember people you are all “at will” employees. You don’t have a say in anything Con-way does. You also can get fired for being a Jets fan, or for preferring Elvis to the Beatles or vice verse. You can be fired for being Republican or for being taller than the boss. You can be fired for your southern accent, or for saying “good morning” in a way that bugs your manager. As an “at will” employee you have no effective job security at all. People, you have rights. It is your right under federal law to form a union, select representatives of your choice and bargain collectively with Con-way. These rights help balance the power that Con-way holds over his or her employees.
Furthermore, being part of a union protects you and provides you with rights that most workers do not have. When workers join together to bargain collectively, they are able to secure wages and benefits that allow themselves and their families to live more comfortably. By federal law, once you have “YES” to form a union, Con-way must bargain with you on wages, benefits and working conditions. People, Vote “YES”!! …….God Bless

  65. My brothers and sisters of Conway .it's very simple !! You don't have a voice at Conway ;you don't mean anything to these people, But you do have worker rights !! And they don't like that .Here in Atlanta they treat us like we are third class citizen's , you just go when they say jump when they say and if you don't well let's just say you won't have a job very long , Without a Union my friends you have no job security , you will not have the benefits that you deserve for your hard labor , you have the right to improve your lifestyle for you and your family , but Conway doesn't see it that way , here in Atlanta supervisor's look down at you like if you were inferior. Let's change this .We can do it . Union yes 2015 is time to make a change bring the union .
